Maker Savvy is thrilled to participate in the FreeSpirit Coat Story. Beatrice was going to have a class to get us started on our Tamarak Jackets, but alas we will not be able to re-open that side of our activities in time for all of you to participate. As we discussed the situation and our desire to continue she had the awesome idea to have a Sew Along. Brilliant! We are so excited.
Quilted Jacket and Coat pictures have been flooding social media and FreeSpirit fabrics have decided to have a little challenge to showcase your talents. To participate in this challenge you will create your very own quilted wearable using the Tamarak Jacket pattern from Grainline studios. Your jacket must be constructed from 100% FreeSpirit Fabrics from current artists. At Maker Savvy we have current lines from Tula Pink, Kaffe Fasset, Sew Kind of Wonderful, Tim Holtz, Jane Sassaman and Sue Penn, so there are a lot to choose from.
You must also use a Quiltsmart Printed Interfacing Product for the basis of your quilted coat. What is that you ask? Quiltsmart has a number of interfacing sheets that have pre-printed grids to complete a complex shape for your finished piece, such as clam shells, flying geese or even hexies! They also have pre-printed grids in 1.5″ and 2.5″ squares where you can place your fabrics and then sew the seams together. For this challenge, Quiltsmart has put a series of ‘jacket/coat’ packages together and they will be available at Maker Savvy. Join FreeSpirit for a Facebook Live session Thursday January 13th at 3pm (Eastern Standard Time) and Mattie from Quiltsmart will be their special guest.
Follow our blog posts on the website where Beatrice and Wendy will show you their progress, what features and feet they are using on their sewing machines, and of course tips and tricks along the way. New blog posts will be announced on our Facebook and Instagram pages or check back on the website for updates.
We are looking forward to seeing what you will be creating and letting you see our fabric and Quiltsmart choices. Next blog post will be after the FreeSpirit Facebook live session on the 13th.
