Two Sides to Every Story: Mastering Reversible Double Knitting

In this workshop with Amanda Schwabe, you will master the art of double knitting—a unique technique where the knit sides face out, and the purl sides stay hidden, resulting in a thick, squishy, and completely reversible piece of knitting. You’ll apply these skills to create customized double-knit coasters, conquering the challenge of managing two strands of yarn simultaneously to create stunning mirror-image designs. You’ll leave this class with the “Big Win” of understanding how to read double-layered charts, giving you the confidence to tackle complex projects like jacquard patterns and integrated pockets.

What You Will Learn

• Simultaneous Layering: Understanding the mechanics of how to knit two separate fabrics on one set of needles at the same time.
• Reversible Colorwork: Mastering the technique of “mirror-imaging” colors to create a design that looks perfect on both sides.
• The Hidden Purl: Learning how to trap the purl stitches inside the work to ensure a smooth, professional finish on both exterior faces.
• Chart Reading for Double Knitting: Deciphering how to follow a pattern when one square on a grid represents two different stitches.
• Foundation Skills for Complexity: Gaining the prerequisite knowledge needed for advanced techniques like reversible slip-stitch cables and knitting in the round.
